Thorman_post_1_image_1Hi there, I’m Ed Thorman, founder and owner of Thorman Tree & Landscaping. I started climbing trees when I was 16, working for my Fathers company, David Thorman Tree Services part time whilst studying at Reaseheath College in Cheshire. I passed the City and Guilds Phase 2 in Horticulture with a distinction, which comprised the study of Forestry, Biology, Propagation and Care of Trees and Woodland. I then stayed at college and went on to obtain the Royal Forestry Society Certificate in Arboriculture, again with distinction.

Combining the long hours of practical work with my Father’s busy tree surgery company, and the academic knowledge I had obtained, I picked up the necessary skills very quickly, and enthusiastically completed various practical courses, driving qualifications and industry accreditations. When my father retired from the contracting business several years later, I took my skills abroad, working in Sweden, Germany, France, and Australia – experiencing diverse tree species, and working as part of a large team on commercial forestry projects.

Upon my return, I set up my own tree surgery business in North Wales. We grew quickly, and gained an excellent reputation for delivering contracts conscientiously and on time with many different domestic and commercial clients in the area. We undertook projects in vegetation management and control, for Network Rail, National Grid, Scottish Power and numerous local authorities and Highways Agencies.

The outbreak of Foot and Mouth in 2001 sent a shockwave though the industry. During this time I diversified, working for several years as a consultant in the biomass industry, passing on my technical knowledge and experience to advise corporate clients in the engineering and design of biomass comminution systems. This role involved travel to the USA to examine Biomass harvesting techniques and technology, establishing equipment import deals and consulting on behalf of UK contractors who required equipment. I designed, prototyped and built several biomass model test beds for industry, one of which was subsequently built in volume, and sold to an American manufacturer as a working design.

After a decade of consultancy work, the demand for professional tree surgery and quality landscaping has grown and Thorman Tree and Landscaping was born in January 2015. Getting back to personally climbing and cutting trees has made massive differences to my health and fitness – the weight gained from sitting behind a desk for years has literally fallen off me, and my former fitness levels are back!

My small team and I look forward to visiting you, advising you and carrying out a professional and high quality tree surgery, fencing and landscaping projects. Our low business overheads make our prices competitive, and you are assured excellent project management as I will be on site, leading from aloft in the crown.
